These gold bars, which weighed a total of 49 kilograms (approximately 108 pounds), were initially confiscated at Comoros’ primary airport in 2021 from three individuals who were set to travel to Dubai. This incident highlighted a smuggling operation linking Madagascar to Comoros, which are situated 800 kilometers (500 miles) apart.
The investigation that ensued led to the rapid repatriation of two suspects from Madagascar, who now face prosecution in their homeland. Concurrently, legal action was taken against five Comorian nationals, including a former airport director and a customs officer, who were arrested and sentenced in 2022 for their roles in the smuggling operation.
