On Monday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the European Union’s commitment of nearly €2.5 billion for the years 2025 and 2026 to support Syria’s transition and socio-economic recovery. This pledge was made during the ninth Brussels Conference, titled “Standing with Syria: Meeting the Needs for a Successful Transition,” which included the participation of Syria’s transitional authorities and was hosted by the EU.
For the year 2025, the EU has increased its financial pledge from €560 million to €720.5 million. This increase aims to provide additional support for Syria’s population, Syrian refugees, and aid vulnerable host communities located in Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. Furthermore, the EU has pledged €600 million for 2026 and allocated €1.1 billion for Turkish refugees and vulnerable host communities for both years.
The conference emphasized the need for enhanced coordination and efficacy among international partners and UN agencies to facilitate Syria’s recovery. It was underscored that the recovery efforts must be led and owned by the Syrian people themselves, ensuring a locally-driven process.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani also made a noteworthy call for the lifting of sanctions and for the reconstruction efforts to commence, stating, “The stability of Syria positively impacts the stability of the region and the world.”
