Mr. Labram Musah urges Ghanaians to prioritize kidney health to prevent diseases during World Kidney Day 2025. He highlights the significance of early detection and encourages regular kidney status checks. With chronic kidney disease prevalent in 13.3% of Ghanaians and lifestyle factors influencing health, public awareness and healthy practices are essential.
On March 14, Mr. Labram Musah, National Coordinator of the Ghana NCD Alliance, emphasized the importance of kidney health during a media event marking World Kidney Day 2025. He urged Ghanaians to prioritize their kidney care to prevent diseases, stating that these vital organs are integral to human health.
Mr. Musah stressed the necessity of individuals taking ownership of their health by regularly checking their kidney status for early disease detection. The primary aim of World Kidney Day, celebrated on the second Thursday of March, is to raise awareness regarding kidney health and the significance of timely intervention.
The theme for World Kidney Day 2025 is “Are Your Kidneys Ok? Detect Early, Protect Kidney Health,” promoting early detection in managing kidney diseases. Kidneys play a crucial role in filtering waste, maintaining fluid balance, regulating blood pressure, and facilitating hormone production.
In Ghana, chronic kidney disease affects approximately 13.3 percent of the population, with chronic glomerulonephritis, diabetes, and hypertension as leading contributory factors. Furthermore, Mr. Musah identified alcohol consumption and smoking as significant risks for kidney health and urged the public to be conscious of their diet and lifestyle choices.
He also called upon the Government to implement health promotion initiatives to enhance awareness about kidney diseases. Additionally, Mr. Kojo Ahenkorah, President of the Renal Patients Association, cautioned against self-medication, labeling it a risky practice that could exacerbate kidney conditions.
He recommended maintaining a healthy lifestyle and undergoing annual health check-ups for early detection and treatment. The focus on kidney health is essential to address the rising concerns of kidney diseases in the country.
The call for Ghanaians to prioritize kidney health highlights the need for awareness and proactive measures to prevent kidney diseases. With a significant prevalence rate and factors such as lifestyle choices impacting health, it is crucial for individuals to engage in regular health assessments and for the government to support health promotion efforts. Ensuring timely intervention and lifestyle adjustments can lead to improved kidney health and overall well-being.
