The Iraqi Presidency on Monday urged Parliament to vote on the Halabja province bill in remembrance of the city’s martyrs. This appeal coincided with the anniversary of the chemical attack on Halabja, highlighting the Baath regime’s atrocities. The Presidency called for global action to prevent the use of prohibited weapons and emphasized the need for support for victims’ families and urban restoration.
On Monday, the Presidency of the Republic of Iraq appealed to Parliament to vote on the Halabja province bill, commemorating the martyrs of this significant city. During a moment of remembrance held in light of the anniversary of the chemical weapons attack on Halabja, President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid emphasized the gravity of the events.
The Presidency articulated that this occasion serves as a solemn reminder of the cruel actions perpetrated by the Baath regime against the Iraqi people, including the extermination efforts in Halabja and the Anfal campaign. “We recall today the memory of the Baath’s crimes against the Iraqi people, including the crimes of extermination in Halabja, Anfal, mass graves and the killing of scientists and national symbols,” they remarked, highlighting collective Iraqi rejection of injustice.
They further stated that the assault on Halabja represented a gross violation of humanity, surpassing even the atrocities committed by the Nazis during WWII. “The attack on Halabja is one of the direct attacks, as it exceeded in its brutality what the Nazis did in Europe during the Second World War,” the statement read.
Moreover, the Presidency urged the global community to take action against the proliferation of prohibited weapons and to foster peace, stressing the importance of supporting the victims’ families and revitalizing the areas affected by the disaster. They reiterated the call for Parliament to endorse the Halabja province law, emphasizing that this initiative honors the sacrifices made by the city’s martyrs.
The call from the Presidency of the Republic for Parliament to vote on the Halabja province bill underscores the enduring impact of the Halabja tragedy. It not only serves as a reminder of the past injustices faced by the Iraqi people but also strengthens the imperative for healing and support for victims’ families. This legislation represents a crucial step towards honoring the memory of those who suffered and brings awareness to international responsibilities regarding weapons of mass destruction.
