He asserted that these institutions have failed to implement necessary reforms, stating, “There is no reform in them. Institutions like the UN cannot play their role.”
Reflecting on the Covid-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that it revealed the limitations of nations and highlighted the necessity for global unity. He noted, “Covid-19 has exposed the limitations of all of us. No matter how much we consider ourselves a great nation… we all came down to earth.” He expressed disappointment that instead of moving towards peace post-pandemic, the world fell into a state of disintegration and uncertainty.
The Prime Minister urged a shift from conflict to cooperation, advocating for a development-driven strategy that acknowledges the interconnectedness of nations. He stated, “As I said earlier, the world is interdependent… Everyone needs everyone, no one can do anything alone.” Modi observed that conflict remains a primary concern in numerous international forums and expressed hope for resolution soon.
In a previous address to the UN’s ‘Summit of the Future’, PM Modi emphasized the urgent need for reform within the UN, confirming that, “global action must match global ambition.” For decades, India has advocated for its inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), asserting that its current structure does not reflect modern geopolitical realities.
India last served as a non-permanent member of the UNSC from 2021 to 2022. The council consists of five permanent members—Russia, the UK, China, France, and the United States—each possessing veto power over substantive resolutions. Notably, previous statements from the UK, France, and the US indicate their support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the council.
