PNG Expo: A Nexus of Opportunities for Energy Industry Stakeholders

The Papua New Guinea Industrial and Mining Resources Exhibition and Conference (PNG Expo) will be held from July 2-3, 2025, featuring major exhibitors and networking opportunities. The resources sector, underpinned by monumental projects like the Angore gas development, is thriving. Santos and other companies are advancing multiple gas developments, reflecting the lucrative nature of PNG’s energy resources.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is witnessing significant interest from leading energy firms, presenting abundant opportunities for suppliers and contractors. The forthcoming Papua New Guinea Industrial and Mining Resources Exhibition and Conference (PNG Expo) aims to facilitate networking and business growth for resources companies in the region. Scheduled for July 2-3 at the Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby, the Expo will feature an organized exhibition and a comprehensive speaker program alongside networking events designed to enhance attendees’ experiences.

Prominent exhibitors such as Metso, Blackwoods, Sandvik, Dreager, Lincom, and Putzmeister have committed to participate, and TriCab has renewed its sponsorship for 2025. The resources sector remains a crucial contributor to PNG’s economic development, with its foundations laid in the early 1900s through the discovery of gold, copper, silver, nickel, and oil and gas resources. As of 2025, the industry is thriving.

A recent collaborative project involving Santos, ExxonMobil, Kumul Petroleum Holdings, Mineral Resources Development Company, and JZ Nippon successfully delivered the Angore gas development. This initiative unlocks a substantial natural gas resource estimated at one trillion cubic feet, facilitating the supply of up to 350 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) per day to ensure sustainable, long-term PNG LNG production. Since its commencement in April 2014, PNG LNG has exported over 83 million tonnes of LNG to Asian markets, with its investment surpassing $19 billion and marking a production capacity exceeding expectations by 30 percent.

Santos Managing Director and CEO Kevin Gallagher commented on the success of the Angore project, highlighting PNG’s significant gas resources in Hela province. The company is pursuing several additional gas developments, with plans to make associated gas from Agogo and Moran available by 2026, potentially adding 125 mmscf per day. Furthermore, the Hides Footwall well is currently being drilled, which could yield an additional 160 mmscf per day if successful. Furthermore, fields such as P’nyang, Muruk, and Juha are poised to assist in maintaining PNG LNG production.

Gallagher expressed optimism about Santos’s position and the future of PNG LNG, stating, “We are spoilt for choice with no shortage of healthy upstream development options to keep our LNG infrastructure full.” With numerous projects on the horizon, it is unsurprising that industry participants are eager to attend the upcoming PNG Expo.

The PNG Expo presents a valuable opportunity for energy industry stakeholders to connect and explore business possibilities in Papua New Guinea’s flourishing resources sector. With successful projects like Angore and continuous advancements in gas exploration, PNG is currently experiencing robust economic growth driven by its natural resources. The participation of notable exhibitors and the projection of future developments affirm the optimistic outlook for both Santos and the broader energy industry in PNG.
