During its 43rd General Assembly held on March 8-9 in Loma Plata, Chaco, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay (Iglesia Evangélica Luterana del Paraguay – IELP) re-elected Rev. Alceu Alton Figur for another three-year term as president. The assembly’s theme, “Guided,” was inspired by Romans 8:14, emphasizing the church’s reliance on divine guidance.
President Figur expressed his gratitude for the re-election, stating, “Being reelected to another three-year term is a privilege and a great honour.” He acknowledged the challenges faced by the church in contemporary society, citing issues such as the erosion of family values and attacks on Christian principles. Despite these struggles, he noted the church’s blessings, including pastoral support in all parishes and ongoing mission efforts nationwide.
Rev. Figur, who has served since 2022, is also the pastor of Cristo Rey Lutheran Church in Asunción and serves on the International Lutheran Council’s (ILC) board of directors as the Latin America regional representative. His reelection was met with positivity from ILC’s General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz, who offered blessings for his continued service both in Paraguay and globally.
The assembly also conducted elections for other church positions and celebrated the dedication of a new Lutheran mission church in Loma Plata. Notably, President Figur travels every two weeks to serve this new congregation, which is 500 kilometers away from his residence. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay plays a significant role as a member of the International Lutheran Council, which is dedicated to upholding the Gospel based on Holy Scripture and Lutheran Confessions.
In summary, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay reaffirmed its leadership with the reelection of President Rev. Alceu Alton Figur. The church faces contemporary challenges but remains committed to its mission, supported by a strong network of pastoral care. The assembly celebrated new beginnings with the dedication of a mission church and continued service within the broader international Lutheran community.
