A coalition of South Sudanese women gathered on Monday to voice their concerns regarding the escalating situation in the country. They expressed fears that the 2018 peace agreement and the Tumaini Initiative are on the brink of collapse. Grace John Kenyi, a noted peace activist and human rights advocate, highlighted the urgency of their message during a press conference in Juba, condemning the increasing violence, particularly the recent clashes in Nasir, Upper Nile State, which began on February 14, 2025.
The women extended condolences to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) for the loss of a crew member and mourned together with families affected by the ongoing conflict, advocating for calm amid rising tensions. Kenyi remarked, “The lives lost are not mere statistics; they are brothers, sisters, children, and the future leaders of our nation. What will become of South Sudan if the future of this young generation is not protected?”
They unitedly urged stakeholders to take immediate action to end the current hostilities and address the worsening economic situation that is disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations. The activists condemned the misuse of social media, which has contributed to the spread of hate speech and misinformation, intensifying societal discord.
While acknowledging the government’s attempts to uphold peace amidst adversity, the women commended citizens who advocate for humanity and peace. Kenyi cautioned that dialogue should be the primary means of resolving conflicts, calling upon signatories of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) to prioritize tranquility and cooperation.
They insisted that the international community must support an independent investigation into recent violence and hold perpetrators accountable. The activists appealed to several ministries to prioritize dialogue, uphold the rule of law, and expedite peace agreement implementations to restore security for all citizens.
In their call for regional stability, they requested that the Ceasefire Transitional Security Arrangement Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM), Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission, African Union (AU), and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) enhance their efforts in preserving peace, ensuring all parties adhere to ceasefire agreements. They further urged diplomatic missions in South Sudan to advocate for accountability and assist humanitarian efforts for those affected by conflict.
Lastly, the coalition addressed the White Army, asking them to renounce violence and pursue peaceful dialogue with the government and local leaders. Activist Lilian Sukeji Micheal announced plans to engage women leaders in government to further their peace initiatives, stating that they will disseminate their message to involve women in high political positions immediately.
The pressing concerns raised by South Sudanese women about the increasing violence and political instability underscore the urgent need for effective dialogue and action. Their call for accountability, peaceful negotiation, and the prioritization of women’s roles in peacebuilding is crucial for achieving lasting stability.
