War Veterans Organize Nationwide Protest Against President Mnangagwa

War veterans in Zimbabwe are organizing a nationwide protest against President Mnangagwa on Thursday, citing the country’s economic crisis and demanding accountability, economic freedom, and an end to corruption and poor governance.

War veterans, accompanied by other aggrieved citizens, are organizing a protest scheduled for Thursday in response to Zimbabwe’s escalating economic crisis. Earlier this month, these veterans, who fought during the country’s liberation struggle, declared their intention to stage widespread demonstrations to compel President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign.

In their correspondence with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the war veterans articulated that the protests aim to highlight the ongoing economic difficulties, demand governmental accountability, advocate for economic freedom, and call for an end to corruption, tribalism, nepotism, and poor governance.

The letter reads, “We, the concerned citizens of Zimbabwe, hereby notify the Joint Operations Command (JOC) of our intention to participate in a peaceful demonstration countrywide… This demonstration is a direct response to the current state of the Zimbabwean economy.”

The letter was endorsed by the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA), the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), representatives of healthcare workers, vendors, and educators. Recently, the war veterans convened a press conference to demand President Mnangagwa’s immediate resignation, attributing the nation’s failures to his leadership.

This call for resignation aligns with recent statements made by expelled Zanu PF Central Committee member, Blessed Geza, a staunch critic of the President, who asserted that Mnangagwa must step aside due to inadequate governance. In response, Geza is reportedly in hiding following a manhunt initiated by law enforcement due to multiple criminal charges against him, including undermining presidential authority and inciting public violence.

The planned protests by war veterans and other citizens underscore the deep dissatisfaction with President Mnangagwa’s leadership amidst a worsening economic situation in Zimbabwe. Their advocacy for accountability and governance reform reflects growing public unrest, spurred further by recent calls for the President’s resignation from prominent critics. These actions signal a significant movement within Zimbabwean society demanding change and leadership accountability.
