Yemen’s Houthis Target US Aircraft Carrier in Escalating Conflict in Red Sea

Yemen’s Houthis announced a second attack on a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Red Sea using rockets and drones, asserting a long confrontation. They warned of counter-escalation against U.S. actions, which included airstrikes resulting in civilian casualties, amidst threats to attack Israeli-linked vessels.

On Monday, the Yemeni Houthi group announced an assault on a U.S. aircraft carrier in the northern Red Sea, utilizing multiple rockets and drones. Yahya Saree, the group’s military spokesman, noted that this was the second such attack in 24 hours, which involved ballistic and cruise missiles. He highlighted that the confrontation lasted several hours, during which Houthi forces successfully repelled an airstrike from warplanes.

Saree emphasized that any escalation against Yemen would be met with a corresponding counter-escalation. Meanwhile, the Houthis’ Al Masirah TV reported that the U.S. had conducted airstrikes targeting the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah and the Al Jawf governorate in northern Yemen.

President Donald Trump initiated the largest military operation in the Middle East since his election, aimed at the Houthis, with expectations for the campaign to extend over several weeks. According to Anees Alsbahi, a spokesperson for the Houthi-run health ministry, the recent airstrikes resulted in at least 53 deaths, including five children and two women, with 98 others injured as reported on X (formerly Twitter).

The U.S. airstrikes were a response to the Houthis’ threats to resume attacks on “Israeli-linked ships” in the Red Sea, in retaliation for the blockade imposed on Gaza amid the ongoing conflict.

The recent military developments in the Red Sea underline escalating tensions between the Yemeni Houthis and the U.S., with significant casualties arising from ongoing attacks. The Houthis’ declaration of countering escalation, alongside U.S. military operations, reflects the complexity of the geopolitical situation in the region. The humanitarian impact remains severe, as indicated by reports of fatalities and injuries among civilians.
