A recent artillery attack by the Rapid Support Forces in Omdurman, Sudan, resulted in at least seven civilian deaths, including two children, and injured 43 others. The shelling occurred during a community prayer event, affecting many children. The continuous conflict in Sudan has led to nearly 30,000 deaths and the displacement of over 15 million people since its onset in April 2023.
On March 18, in Omdurman, a city located north of Khartoum, Sudan, at least seven civilians, including two children, were reported killed due to artillery shelling conducted by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The state government reported that the bombardment injured 43 individuals, with 18 of them being children aged between four and twelve years. The injured were subsequently transported to nearby hospitals for medical assistance.
The RSF shelling targeted neighborhoods in the Karari locality during a volunteer prayer, a time when many children were engaged in football games. A paramedic from Al-Nao Hospital revealed that many patients had suffered limb injuries caused by flying projectiles. Some casualties required amputations, while others sustained serious head injuries needing specialized medical care that was not available at the facility.
The RSF has not yet provided a response to the situation. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have consistently accused the RSF of targeting the Karari locality, the last densely populated area in Omdurman and home to several military bases, including the strategically important Wadi Seidna military area, which houses a military airport.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which erupted in mid-April 2023 between the SAF and the RSF, has been devastating. According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project cited by the United Nations, the violence has resulted in approximately 29,683 fatalities. Additionally, over 15 million individuals have been displaced, both within Sudan and in neighboring countries, according to figures provided by the International Organization for Migration.
The recent artillery attack in Omdurman underscores the escalating violence in Sudan stemming from the conflict between the SAF and RSF. With civilian casualties mounting and innocent children among the victims, the humanitarian situation remains dire. The international community must continue to monitor the crisis and advocate for peace to prevent further loss of life and displacement.
