Call to Strengthen Catholic Identity in Ghanaian Schools at Education Forum

The Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana concluded with a call for enhancing Catholic identity in schools. Led by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Matthew Gyamfi emphasized collective efforts, strategic partnerships, and a focus on Catholic doctrines. Recommendations include reviewing a management memorandum with various faith organizations and developing a national framework for Catholic education by 2025.

The Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana concluded with a strong emphasis on enhancing the Catholic identity within educational institutions. Held from March 10 to 15, and hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, the forum focused on the theme, “Catholic Education for Integral Development: Shaping a Resilient and Inclusive Ghana.” The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, while addressing the participants, highlighted that effective education delivery necessitates collaborative efforts and well-defined roles.

In the aftermath of the forum, Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani presented several recommendations. He urged collaboration with various relevant organizations, including the Christian Council of Ghana and Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana, to review a draft Memorandum of Understanding for managing mission schools. This memorandum aims for government endorsement and implementation in the upcoming 2025/2026 academic year.

Furthermore, Bishop Gyamfi suggested the formation of a committee by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference to develop a national strategic framework for Catholic education over a five-year period by July 2025. He stressed the importance of reinforcing the Catholic identity in schools through teaching Catholic doctrines, establishing chapels, increasing clergy presence, and appointing chaplains to support the spiritual needs of students.

The Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana has underscored the necessity of strengthening the Catholic identity in educational institutions through collaborative efforts and strategic frameworks.
