China Expresses Interest in Ukraine’s Post-War Reconstruction Efforts

China aims to participate in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, aligning assistance with the wishes of involved parties. A spokesman for the China International Development Cooperation Agency confirmed this willingness, following Ukrainian President Zelensky’s comments. The estimated recovery cost for Ukraine is US$524 billion, with US$13 billion already spent by Kyiv.

On Monday, Beijing expressed its intention to engage in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine through its foreign aid and international development agency. According to Li Ming, a spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency, assistance would be aligned “in accordance with the wishes of the parties.” Li emphasized China’s readiness to lend support within its capacities, which encompasses future reconstruction efforts in Ukraine.

Li’s statements follow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s remarks regarding China’s potential contribution to restoring peace and rebuilding efforts on the three-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion. The estimated cost of recovery and reconstruction in Ukraine over the next decade stands at a staggering US$524 billion, with Kyiv having disbursed US$13 billion thus far in recovery efforts, aided by international partners, as indicated in a joint report by the Ukrainian government, the World Bank Group, the European Commission, and the United Nations.

China’s eagerness to participate in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction highlights its commitment to international development and cooperation. With an estimated recovery cost of US$524 billion, the potential involvement of China could be significant for Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts, aligning with the expressed wishes of both parties and reflecting a broader commitment to global stability.
