During an appearance on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Martey dismissed the notion that the crisis was as severe as reported and reiterated GWCL’s commitment to transparency in its operations.
Martey acknowledged the existence of water shortages, stating that rationing is necessary to ensure an equitable distribution of resources. He highlighted that varying amounts of water supply to different areas reflect their proximity to the supply sources, stating, “Everyone understands and appreciates that we need to share water equitably so that everybody can have some.”
To mitigate the situation, Martey advised the public to store water when available. He noted, “Every area receives water at least four days a week,” emphasizing the value of water storage for managing supply inconsistencies.
Regarding long-term solutions, Martey outlined GWCL’s plans, including short-term repairs to treatment plants, medium-term projects to replace outdated pumps, and the expansive Ghana Water Expansion Project, which requires substantial funding and governmental approval. “The whole expansion project is a priority, and even His Excellency the President is very much aware and wants it done,” Martey stated.
He reassured Ghanaians of GWCL’s commitment to addressing these challenges and expressed understanding for the public’s frustrations: “We are pleading with the public. The development has not kept pace with population growth… But let us support each other and manage the situation together.”
