The Greater Tonj area in South Sudan faces intercommunal violence but has received a boost to peace efforts through the provision of 33 motorcycles. This initiative aims to improve the response capabilities of law enforcement and community peacebuilding organizations, facilitating quicker emergency responses and fostering peaceful resolutions.
The Greater Tonj area in South Sudan, known for its history of intercommunal violence, has recently received a significant boost in peace and security efforts. The lack of mobility for law enforcement and community peacebuilding groups has hindered their effectiveness in preventing crime. However, the introduction of 33 motorcycles aims to address this issue, markedly improving their capacity to respond to emergencies quickly.
Gabriel Dut, a cattle camp leader from Tonj South, emphasized the importance of these motorcycles, stating, “These motorbikes will greatly enhance our ability to respond quickly to emergencies, and that is crucial for us to be able to maintain peace in and between our communities.”
This initiative is part of the Kong Koc peacebuilding project, overseen by the Reconciliation, Stabilization, and Resilience Trust Fund, which includes the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. Addressing the communal tensions, Abuok Anei of the Tonj South Oversight Committee remarked on the project’s potential, expressing hope for peaceful resolutions and recovery for affected families, “We have wasted so much time fighting each other. Now, with this project, we hope that affected families will receive the justice they deserve.”
The motorcycles provided were financed by the South Sudan Multi-Partner Trust Fund, marking a critical step toward fostering peace and development in the region.
Distributed by APO Group on behalf of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), this development underscores the ongoing commitment to stabilizing conflict-affected areas through collaborative efforts.
The Greater Tonj region is poised for improved peace and security following the implementation of a project providing motorcycles to enhance mobility among law enforcement and peacebuilding efforts. The community-led initiative aims to foster peaceful resolutions to long-standing conflicts, ultimately contributing to the development of the area. Such collaborative efforts are essential for restoring stability and justice in South Sudan.
