On March 17, Lebanese President Michel Aoun ordered military action in retaliation to gunfire from the Syrian side, following deadly clashes that occurred overnight. The Lebanese Ministry of Health disclosed that the violence resulted in the deaths of seven Lebanese citizens and injured 52 others, including a young child.
The armed confrontation was sparked by accusations from the Syrian government against Hezbollah, claiming that the group crossed the border, kidnapped, and killed three soldiers on Lebanese territory. Hezbollah has denied these allegations, while alternative accounts suggest involvement from local clans engaged in border-related smuggling activities. These incidents mark the most severe clashes since the ousting of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime last December.
