The Nigerian Senate has established an ad hoc committee to investigate Cameroon’s alleged annexation of mangrove islands in Akwa Ibom State. They are urging President Bola Tinubu to take protective steps regarding Nigeria’s territorial waters and economic resources. The situation highlights significant concerns about sovereignty and international law compliance.
The Nigerian Senate has initiated an inquiry into Cameroon’s alleged unlawful annexation of mangrove islands and maritime territories located in Efiat-Mbo, Akwa Ibom State. An ad hoc committee has been established, tasked with investigating the issue and formulating recommendations within a two-month timeframe. Furthermore, the Senate has called upon President Bola Tinubu to take immediate measures to protect Nigeria’s territorial waters and address the approximately 2,560 oil wells situated within the contested areas.
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim of Ondo South will chair the ad hoc committee, which also includes Senators Adeniyi Adegbonmire, Seriake Dickson, Shehu Lawan Kaka, Ipalibo Harry Banigo, Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, Ekong Sampson Akpan, Mohammed Sani Bello, and Aniekan Bassey. This initiative follows a motion introduced by Senator Bassey, who highlighted the economic and territorial ramifications resulting from Cameroon’s encroachment into Nigerian territory.
Senator Bassey stated that the mangrove islands in question were not part of the territories ceded to Cameroon under historical treaties or the International Court of Justice’s ruling from 2002. He expressed concern over the imposition of foreign laws on 16 Nigerian ancestral villages, branding this situation a “monumental national embarrassment.” He further claimed that this encroachment has led to substantial economic losses for Nigeria, especially concerning vital oil and gas revenues.
The motion reveals that 16 Nigerian villages in the region are under the occupation of Cameroonian forces, raising significant concerns regarding the violation of international laws. Lawmakers emphasized the need for urgent action to counter perceived provocations from Cameroon, with many expressing a sense of urgency regarding potential threats to Nigeria’s sovereignty. Senator Dickson, for instance, voiced concerns for the affected communities, while others advocated for a review of the ICJ rulings and heightening international awareness through the United Nations.
The recent Senate actions underline the gravity of Cameroon’s alleged annexation of Nigerian territories, along with its implications for national sovereignty and economic resources. The establishment of an ad hoc committee and the call for protective measures from President Bola Tinubu reflect the urgency and seriousness with which Nigerian lawmakers view this situation. Moreover, the appeal to international bodies emphasizes the need for global recognition and support in addressing this territorial dispute.
