On Monday, South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul reiterated the country’s readiness to accept North Korean soldiers captured by Ukraine. This statement arises amid rising apprehensions that these soldiers may face legal and political challenges potentially leading to their return to North Korea. In a discussion with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Cho asserted that the two North Korean individuals detained in the Kursk region of Russia are viewed as citizens of the Republic of Korea (ROK) according to South Korea’s constitutional provisions, as noted in a recent press release from Seoul’s foreign ministry.
The commitment demonstrated by South Korea shows its intention to support North Korean soldiers and ensure their safety, recognizing them as citizens under its constitution.
