Sudan Faces Severe Inflation Crisis, Impacting Rural Areas Most Hardly

Sudan’s annual inflation rate hit 142.34% in February 2025, with rural areas most affected at 155.84%. The Consumer Price Index rose to 382533.02 points, showing dramatic price increases, particularly in food and basic necessities. The UN’s humanitarian aid efforts face severe funding challenges, necessitating urgent attention.

The inflation rate in Sudan has surged to an alarming 142.34% annually as of February, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Rural areas are experiencing the most severe impact, with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) increase of 155.84%, compared to 123.32% in urban areas. The CPI recorded a total of 382533.02 points in February 2025, a significant rise from the previous year’s 157847.54 points, indicating a sharp increase of 224685.48 points.

In January 2025, overall price levels had already risen by 145.14% from the prior year. The CPI also recorded a monthly increase of 4346.83 points from January to February, illustrating a monthly change rate of 1.15%. In the food and beverage sector alone, the CPI reached 162439.07 points in February 2025, an increase from 161179.17 points in January, indicating a modest monthly change of 0.78%.

Comparing rural and urban areas further reveals the extent of the crisis: urban CPI increased to 273560.25 points in February 2025 from 122498.23 points in February 2024, reflecting an inflation rate of 123.32%. In rural regions, CPI surged to 497221.82 points from 194350.49 points the previous year, marking an astonishing inflation rate of 155.84%.

In the face of such inflation, particularly in food and basic necessities, the humanitarian situation remains critical. The UN has aimed to assist nearly 21 million vulnerable individuals in Sudan in 2025, but funding challenges have arisen. With an estimated $4.2 billion needed for humanitarian efforts, only 6.3% of this amount has been secured. The UN’s Global Humanitarian Overview emphasizes the severity of the crisis, detailing the highest number of individuals in need under any UN-coordinated initiative this year.

In summary, Sudan is currently grappling with unprecedented inflation rates, particularly in rural regions, where the CPI has soared to levels reflecting a staggering 155.84% increase. The humanitarian crisis is compounded by insufficient funding needed to adequately support millions affected by this economic turmoil. The urgency for comprehensive financial assistance to meet the growing humanitarian needs in Sudan cannot be overstated.
