U.S. Envoy Urges Lebanon to Initiate Direct Talks with Israel

The U.S. is pressuring Lebanon for direct negotiations with Israel, criticizing its approach to Hezbollah. Envoy Steve Witkoff highlights conditions for reconstruction and the disarmament of Hezbollah, marking a shift in U.S. policy.

The United States has expressed dissatisfaction with Lebanon’s management of Hezbollah, urging direct political negotiations between Lebanon and Israel. U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, emphasized Washington’s rejection of the Lebanese government’s current approach, describing it as ineffective and unproductive.

Witkoff indicated that Lebanon is expected to hold face-to-face negotiations with Israel, led by a civilian representative from Beirut. On the Israeli side, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will represent their interests in the forthcoming talks.

The U.S. envoy reportedly conditioned Lebanon’s reconstruction and resolution of territorial disputes with Israel upon the achievement of a political settlement. Witkoff underscored that reconstruction efforts in southern Lebanon and Beirut’s suburbs are contingent on this agreement.

Moreover, displaced residents will not be allowed to return to frontline towns without such an accord. Witkoff also mentioned that Israel would maintain control over five disputed border points for up to a year, stating that broader discussions about the thirteen contested areas will not occur unless they align with U.S. policies.

In connection with Hezbollah, Witkoff asserted that the group must disarm, not only in the South Litani region as dictated by U.N. Resolution 1701 but in all operational areas, including the Northern Litani and Bekaa Valley. These statements reflect intensifying U.S. pressure on Lebanon to alter its political dynamics regarding Hezbollah and negotiations with Israel.

In summary, the U.S. is urging Lebanon to engage directly with Israel in political negotiations, expressing dissatisfaction with Lebanon’s handling of Hezbollah. The conditions set forth by Envoy Steve Witkoff emphasize the need for a political settlement before any reconstruction efforts or return of displaced residents can proceed. The focus on disarming Hezbollah extends beyond its southern base, indicating a comprehensive shift in U.S. approach to regional stability.
