Ukraine Dismantles North Korean Howitzers in Kursk Region

Ukrainian forces have destroyed three North Korean howitzers in Kursk, as reported by the Unmanned Systems Forces Command. This successful strike follows a previous destruction of Koksan howitzers in Luhansk. The M1978 Koksan is North Korea’s longest-range artillery, now utilized by Russia amid heavy combat with Ukraine.

The Unmanned Systems Forces Command of Ukraine has reported the destruction of three North Korean howitzers located in the Kursk region. As detailed by Ukrinform, these artillery systems, delivered to Russia as military aid from North Korea, had been camouflaged in a forest area, with the enemy employing protective ‘grills’ against FPV drones.

Ukrainian drone operators detected the North Korean self-propelled howitzers and successfully targeted them with high-explosive and cluster warheads from Ukrainian rocket artillery. This incident marks the second successful strike against the M1978 Koksan howitzer during the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The previous strike was executed by the 412th NEMESIS Regiment in the Luhansk region approximately a month ago.

The M1978 Koksan is recognized as the longest-range artillery system in North Korea’s arsenal, equipped with a 170 mm gun capable of reaching targets up to 60 kilometers away. Designed initially to threaten targets in Seoul from the northern side of the demilitarized zone, its deployment by Russian forces aims to mitigate severe artillery losses encountered during the conflict.

According to reports from Ukrinform, as of March 18, a total of 76 combat engagements have occurred between Ukrainian defenders and Russian troops, with the battles intensifying particularly in the Kursk region.

In summary, Ukrainian forces have successfully destroyed three North Korean howitzers deployed by Russia in the Kursk region, following prior achievements against the same artillery unit. The advanced M1978 Koksan system poses a significant threat due to its long-range capabilities; however, Ukraine’s defensive measures demonstrate effective responses to such artillery threats amidst ongoing conflict efforts. The situation remains dynamic, with intense clashes reported in various regions.
