In Iran, a report identified severe abuses linked to protests following Mahsa Amini’s death in 2022. Sara Hossein, chair of the Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, noted that peaceful demonstrators, including children, faced gunfire and violence during detainment, leading to torture and rape.
Ms. Hossein emphasized that Iran had failed to acknowledge the rightful demands for justice from the protesting populace and highlighted the regime’s ongoing repression of fundamental rights, particularly affecting women and girls. Reports from victims indicated a lack of trust in Iran’s judicial system, prompting calls for external accountability measures.
Similarly, the situation in Syria was addressed, with Paulo Pinheiro, head of the Commission of Inquiry, urging efforts to ascertain the fates of tens of thousands missing due to the Assad regime.
