Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber, Ph.D., the director of the Division of Humanities and Criminology at the University of the District of Columbia’s Community College, has been selected to participate in a prestigious two-week research seminar in Dakar, Senegal, scheduled from January 3-21, 2024. This opportunity highlights her commitment to education and global engagement.

The program, known as the CAORC-WARC 2024 Faculty Development Seminar, is a competitive initiative organized by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) in partnership with the West African Research Center (WARC). Participants will visit notable sites such as Goree Island, Toubacouta, and Saint-Louis, enriching their understanding of West African culture and history.

CAORC aims to offer fully funded seminars to faculty and administrators from U.S. community colleges and minority-serving institutions, enhancing their ability to impart a global perspective that champions diversity and fosters critical thinking, effective communication, and leadership skills. Each seminar accommodates between 12 and 15 participants, ensuring personalized learning experiences.

The seminar is titled, “West Africa and the Diaspora: Continuities and Transformations,” and includes a diverse array of educational formats including lectures, site visits, panel discussions, and film screenings. It will explore various aspects of Senegal’s history, culture, economy, and the connections to the diaspora, with particular attention to Senegal’s religious diversity and the implications of transnational movements on society and youth.
