The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully installed 200 smart prepaid meters in the Suame District, specifically in Asuoyeboa and Bantam Racecourse. This initiative represents a pilot project under the Loss Reduction Project (LRP), which is set to continue for three months before a decision regarding a wider rollout is made. According to Mr. George Amoah, the Ashanti West Regional General Manager, this implementation is crucial due to the large customer base of over 120,000 in the Suame District, the highest among the Ashanti West Region’s districts.
Among the newly installed meters, 150 single-phase and 50 three-phase smart prepaid meters have been introduced, replacing non-smart prepaid meters, faulty prepaid meters, and certain postpaid meters at no cost to the customers. The new meters feature advanced technology that tracks activity, thereby facilitating better management and detection of illegal connections. In cases of tampering, these meters automatically shut down and prevent further purchases of prepaid credits. Mr. Amoah confirmed that all customers would receive a transfer of any remaining credits to their new meters, ensuring a seamless transition.
The installation aligns with the Meter Management System (MMS), which allows customers to purchase prepaid credits online, thereby saving time and resources. Furthermore, the meters offer real-time insights into energy usage, enhancing customer experience and convenience. Mr. Amoah also mentioned that the ECG has resolved all meter application backlogs for 2024 across several districts, including Adum and Ahinsan. He urged the public to assist in combating illegal connections by reporting suspicious activities, noting that informants could receive a 6% commission on recovered amounts for their valuable tips.
