Fiji has been designated as a co-facilitator for the 2026 Climate Change and Oceans Dialogue in partnership with Brazil and COP30. This decision, supported by developing countries at COP29 in Azerbaijan, demonstrates Fiji’s commitment to combating climate change and protecting marine environments.
Fiji has been appointed as a co-facilitator for the upcoming 2026 Climate Change and Oceans Dialogue, a significant event under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This collaboration will occur alongside the Government of Brazil and the incoming COP30 presidency. The Fiji Government confirmed that this decision received unanimous support from all developing country parties during the selection process at COP29 held in Baku, Azerbaijan, last year.
According to government updates, the co-facilitation arrangement will be executed on a rotational basis. Initially, Brazil will take on the role in 2025 with Fiji’s support, before Fiji steps in as co-facilitator in 2026. Carlos Márcio Bicalho Cozendey from Brazil will lead the dialogues for 2025, while Dr. Sivendra Michael, Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, will lead in 2026.
This appointment underscores Fiji’s steadfast commitment to combatting climate change and protecting marine ecosystems, reinforcing its role as a leader in these crucial global discussions.
Fiji’s role as co-facilitator in the 2026 Climate Change and Oceans Dialogue signifies its dedication to addressing climate issues alongside Brazil. This collaborative effort, supported by developing countries at COP29, enhances Fiji’s leadership position in global climate negotiations, particularly regarding ocean conservation.
