The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have reportedly killed a minimum of 50 individuals in Khartoum over the past week amidst escalating clashes with the national army for control of the capital. The Khartoum Emergency Response Room, a coalition of volunteers, expressed that the conditions in Khartoum are tragic, highlighting widespread human rights violations committed by the RSF and associated militias across multiple areas.
Furthermore, during the week, approximately 70 people, including 12 volunteers, have been abducted, contributing to a significant rise in forced displacement in the central, southern, and eastern parts of Khartoum. Reports of sexual violence have emerged, although quantifying these incidents remains challenging due to societal fears and stigma. Malnutrition rates have escalated to alarming levels, resulting in the deaths of seven children since the beginning of March.
According to UNICEF, an estimated 3.2 million children in Sudan are anticipated to experience malnutrition this year. Moreover, famine has been officially declared in three displacement camps in the western region of Darfur, as well as parts of the Nuba mountains in the southern region, following a U.N.-backed evaluation.
The conflict between the RSF and the army, which commenced in April 2023, has worsened recently with the army attempting to regain control over territories in Khartoum and surrounding areas. In a recent video address, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo donned a kadamol headscarf and proclaimed that his troops would not relinquish the Republican Palace.
The army has declared that its forces are advancing into Khartoum from the south, converging with troops in the capital’s center and intensifying pressure on RSF fighters as they approach the possibility of reclaiming the city. This nationwide conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, displaced over 12 million individuals, and triggered the most severe hunger and displacement crises in the world. In Khartoum, at least 3.5 million people have been uprooted from their homes due to the violence, with around 100,000 people facing acute famine, according to United Nations statistics.
The ongoing conflict between the RSF and the national army in Sudan has escalated significantly, resulting in substantial loss of life, displacement of millions, and widespread malnutrition among children.
