The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Niger has initiated a sensitization campaign aimed at educating local communities on disaster risk reduction and proper waste disposal. Hussaini Isah, head of NEMA’s Minna Operations Office, spearheaded this initiative in the Anguwan Daji community, focusing on the need for preparation as the 2025 flood predictions loom. This campaign is conducted in collaboration with organizations such as the NYSC-NEMA Emergency Management Vanguard (EMV) and NISEPA.
Isah highlighted the importance of mitigation strategies and noted the necessity for prompt and effective responses during disasters. The agency plans to extend their awareness efforts throughout Minna and Kwara state. He pointed out that improper waste disposal is a significant global issue, which is prevalent within Nigeria, clogging urban drainage systems and leading to water accumulation.
He urged the Niger state government to establish recycling plants to improve waste management and disposal. Ahmed Abubakar, the President of NEMA EMV, emphasized the initiative’s goal to tackle pressing community health hazards resulting from improper waste disposal, particularly given the risks posed to children.
Alhaji Nasir Tanko, the community head of Anguwan Daji, recommended the establishment of alternative waste disposal sites to prevent indiscriminate dumping in waterway areas. He stressed the need for public awareness campaigns to inform residents about new disposal sites and the negative implications of improper waste practices.
Moreover, Zuwaira Hassan, a resident, lamented the recent loss of services that included house-to-house waste collection and proper waste containers, urging the state government to rectify this situation promptly to safeguard public health.
