Michael Olunga Calls for Fan Support Ahead of Harambee Stars’ Homecoming Match

Michael Olunga urges Kenyans to support the Harambee Stars in their return to the Nyayo National Stadium after three years of playing abroad. The team will host Gabon on March 23, 2025, in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying match. Olunga thanks the government for enabling the stadium’s readiness and highlights ongoing improvements at several sports facilities across Kenya.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has a significant message for Kenyans as the national football team prepares to return to the Nyayo National Stadium after a three-year absence. The team last hosted a competitive match at home on November 15, 2021, against Rwanda during the 2022 World Cup Qualifying series. Since then, Kenya has played its home matches abroad due to the lack of a CAF-approved stadium.

Following renovations, Nyayo Stadium has been deemed fit by CAF, allowing Harambee Stars to host their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying match against Gabon on March 23, 2025. Olunga is calling on fans to support the team in large numbers to boost their campaign for a spot in the World Cup.

During an interview with FKF Media, Olunga emphasized, “I urge our fans and Kenyans at large to turn up in large numbers on Sunday and give us the 12th-man support that we need and have been missing. Kenyans love football and we are looking forward to meeting them on Sunday.” He expressed his enthusiasm for competitive international football returning to Kenya after a four-year hiatus.

Olunga recognized the government’s efforts in preparing Nyayo Stadium to meet CAF standards, stating, “I want to thank the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Sports for ensuring that we have Nyayo Stadium ready for international matches.” In addition to Nyayo, renovations are ongoing at Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret. Other facilities include the Police Sacco Stadium, Kirigiti Stadium, and Kasarani Annex, all receiving upgrades, while Talanta Sports City is currently being constructed and is 40% complete.

In conclusion, Michael Olunga’s message underscores the importance of fan support for the Harambee Stars as they prepare for their first competitive match at home in four years. The efforts by the Kenyan government to upgrade stadium facilities demonstrate a commitment to reviving international football in the country. The upcoming match against Gabon on March 23, 2025, marks a crucial moment for Kenyan football and aims to unite fans in a shared passion for the sport.
