Mozambique and Zambia have signed a crucial agreement to interconnect their energy systems, aiming to enhance electricity supply within the SADC. The project, managed by EDM and ZESCO, carries an estimated cost of $411.5 million and involves developing a 400 kV power transmission line. This initiative aims to boost regional energy trade and position Mozambique favorably in the energy market.
Mozambique and Zambia have entered into a significant agreement to interconnect their energy systems, aimed at ensuring a stable electricity supply within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). The signing took place on Wednesday and involves parties from the publicly-owned Mozambican electricity company, EDM, and the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation, ZESCO.
The Memorandum of Understanding was executed by António Manda, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mozambique, and Makoze Chikote, the Zambian Minister of Energy. This project, estimated to cost approximately $411.5 million, aims to not only enhance energy supply capacity but also to solidify Mozambique’s role in the regional energy market.
According to the statement provided, the interconnection will boost energy exchange, thus promoting trade with other SADC members and producing additional revenue for Mozambique. Specifically, the initiative comprises the development of a 400 kV power transmission line extending around 376 kilometers, linking Mozambique’s Matambo Substation and Zambia’s Chipata West Substation.
Joaquim Ou-chim, chairperson of EDM, expressed that the agreement signifies a shift from planning to execution for this anticipated project. He underscored that in the present global energy landscape, regional collaboration is essential, stating, “As Africa moves towards greater energy integration, projects like this pave the way for a more connected and self-sufficient continent.”
The recent agreement between Mozambique and Zambia to interconnect their electricity systems marks a vital step in enhancing regional energy collaboration within SADC. With a considerable financial investment and a clear operational framework, the project promises to not only expand energy capacity but also reinforce Mozambique’s standing in the regional energy market. The establishment of this interconnection illustrates the importance of cooperative strategies for energy sustainability in Southern Africa.
