Mozambique and Zimbabwe Forge Strategic Rail Partnership for Enhanced Freight Services

Mozambique Railways and National Railways of Zimbabwe have signed agreements for CFM to operate trains in Zimbabwe, enhancing freight services. The partnership is expected to streamline transport across key rail corridors, increasing efficiency and reliability for businesses.

Mozambique Railways (CFM) and the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) have formalized a significant agreement enabling CFM to operate its locomotives within Zimbabwe. This strategic partnership aims to enhance freight transport efficiency between the two nations, offering businesses improved and economically viable rail freight services.

Key officials from both organizations participated in the signing ceremony held in Maputo. Among the attendees were CFM Chairman Agostinho Langa Júnior, Executive Director Cândido Jone, NRZ Chairman Michael Madiro, and General Manager Ainah Dube-Kaguru.

The partnership is focused on critical rail corridors, particularly the 148-kilometre Southern Corridor from Chicualacuala to Rutenga and the 84-kilometre Central Corridor between Machipanda and Nyazura. Under the agreements, CFM will provide locomotives, operational staff, and essential fuel for at least two daily round trips across these routes.

In reciprocation, NRZ is obligated to ensure sufficient cargo volumes and maintain railway infrastructure to facilitate the safe operation of CFM’s locomotives. This agreement builds on a prior 2023 agreement between CFM and South Africa’s Transnet Freight Rail, which streamlined cross-border train services from Mpumalanga to the Port of Maputo without the need for locomotive changes at the border.

This collaboration has resulted in a notable 23% increase in magnetite export volumes during its initial phase. The agreement has since expanded to include the transportation of chrome and ferrochrome, allowing for three daily train operations.

In summary, the recent agreements between Mozambique Railways and the National Railways of Zimbabwe represent a significant advancement in regional rail cooperation. By facilitating seamless locomotive operations and ensuring adequate cargo volumes, this partnership aims to bolster freight efficiency and stimulate trade between Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The expansions of services signal the commitment of both countries to enhance economic ties through improved logistics and infrastructure.
