Zimbabwe: Rising Tensions and Assassination Claims Amidst Zanu-PF Factionalism

The General Chiwenga Voluntary Supporters Association claims that mercenaries have been hired to assassinate Vice President General Chiwenga amidst rising factionalism in the Zanu PF party. Accusations from party spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa further exacerbate tensions between Chiwenga and President Mnangagwa. A planned protest on March 31 aims to combat cronyism and demand accountability from the current regime.

In Zimbabwe, a faction supporting Vice President General Chiwenga has reported an alleged assassination plot against him, claiming hired mercenaries are involved. This assertion emerges during a period of escalating factionalism within the Zanu PF party, highlighting power struggles between Chiwenga and President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa, who endorses Mnangagwa’s continued presidency beyond the 2028 limit, has disparaged Chiwenga, labeling him as cruel and unelectable in a recent leaked recording. Chiwenga’s requests for action against Mutsvangwa have yet to yield results.

The General Chiwenga Voluntary Supporters Association (GCVSA) issued a statement asserting awareness of plans to assassinate Chiwenga and others involved in a scheduled demonstration on March 31. Their secretary-general, Ntokozo Msipha, condemned this alleged mercenary involvement, framing it as foreign interference and a declaration of war on Zimbabwe.

Chiwenga is contesting Mnangagwa’s efforts to remain in power until 2030, with Mnangagwa’s supporters vigorously campaigning for his extended presidency. War veterans, led by Blessed Geza, have planned a protest on March 31 to oppose the cronyism they attribute to Mnangagwa’s administration.

Msipha emphasized the GCVSA’s support for the March protest, asserting that it represents a significant moment for Zimbabweans to reject oppression and demand accountability. He cautioned against intimidation from government threats and reminded law enforcement of their duty to the nation, not to what he labeled a rogue regime.

A press conference by war veteran Ethan Mathibela intended to discuss the protest was disrupted by unidentified individuals in Bulawayo, reflecting the tense atmosphere surrounding these political developments.

The allegations of an assassination plot against Vice President General Chiwenga underscore the intense factionalism within Zimbabwe’s Zanu PF party. Tensions between Chiwenga and President Mnangagwa are accentuated by public disputes and accusations of assassination attempts. The General Chiwenga Voluntary Supporters Association has rallied support for March 31, highlighting resistance against perceived tyranny and calling for accountability from the regime. The political climate remains volatile, with significant implications for the nation’s future.
