Zimbabwe Vigil: Addressing Internal Conflicts and Advocating for Human Rights

The Zimbabwe Vigil on March 15, 2025, highlighted internal ZANU PF conflicts and public skepticism regarding political change. Chris Mutsvangwa criticized Vice President Chivengwa concerning his treatment of women. The Geza Movement sees Chivengwa as a successor to President Mnangagwa, though doubts persist about their effectiveness. The Vigil maintains its commitment to protesting for human rights and has published a book documenting the crisis in Zimbabwe.

On March 15, 2025, the Zimbabwe Vigil gathered outside the Zimbabwe Embassy in London, with participants including Rohan Gupta, Jonathan Kariwo, Pamela Magwizi, and others. As dissent within ZANU PF escalated, the Zimbabwean populace remained largely unaware of the country’s future direction.

Recent tensions surfaced as Chris Mutsvangwa publicly criticized Vice President Chivengwa, questioning his credibility as a war hero and condemning his treatment of women, particularly his estranged wife, Mary. She is currently barred from seeing her children and faces health issues, amidst ongoing criminal charges against her initiated by the Vice President. Mutsvangwa suggested that a presidential pardon could be warranted for Mary, contingent on her estranged husband’s cooperation.

The Geza Movement has identified Chivengwa as a potential successor to President Mnangagwa, maintaining the belief that political change could occur by March 31, 2025. However, widespread skepticism persists among the public, who doubt the movement’s ability to challenge the entrenched corruption of Mnangagwa’s regime.

Concerns have arisen that confronting the current government proves more difficult than opposing the previous Mugabe administration, with many civil society voices stifled by fear. This atmosphere of intimidation grants Mnangagwa and his associates unchallenged authority, facilitating continued exploitation of the nation’s resources. Citizens are urged to awaken and take decisive actions to safeguard their future.

The Vigil’s next meeting will occur on Saturday, April 1st, from 2 to 5 PM. Meetings are held regularly on the first and third Saturdays of each month, while virtual sessions occur on other Saturdays. The Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe (ROHR) serves as the Vigil’s partner organization, promoting the organization’s mission on the ground.

The Vigil has published a book titled “Zimbabwe Emergency,” chronicling the unfolding crisis in the nation from the perspective of the diaspora in the UK. It documents economic decline, violence, and political manipulation. Proceeds from the book support the Vigil and ROHR’s efforts in Zimbabwe and it is available for purchase at the Vigil and on Amazon.

The Zimbabwe Vigil continues to advocate for human rights and democratic reforms in Zimbabwe, amidst internal conflicts within ZANU PF and a skeptical public regarding potential political changes. The situation remains tense as activists and organizations strive to challenge corruption and promote meaningful change in the country. The collective efforts of the diaspora highlight the importance of sustained pressure on the regime, emphasizing the need for unity and action among the citizenry.
