The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has recognized the contributions of Ugandan Police officers for their courageous efforts in promoting peace in Somalia. A medal parade was held at the AUSSOM Force Headquarters in Mogadishu, attended by Police Commissioner, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Hillary Sao Kanu and other senior officials. The United Formed Police Unit 12 (UFPU-12), deployed in April 2024 under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), has played a key role in the success of the mission by providing operational support to the Somali Police Force. AIGP Kanu praised the officers for their resilience and discipline in the face of significant challenges, noting that their contributions, particularly through community policing and capacity-building for the Somali Police Force, have been vital.
AIGP Kanu underscored, “The successful execution of joint operations with the Somali Police Force, your assistance in supporting the electoral processes, and your commitment to upholding human rights have significantly contributed to AUSSOM’s success.” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Justus Asiimwe, the UFPU-12 Contingent Commander, also commended the cooperation exhibited with the Nigerian Formed Police Unit and the Ugandan troops stationed in Mogadishu.
“We will always cherish the experiences and relationships that we have developed and cultivated. No two groups understand each other better than us and Nigeria,” expressed SSP Asiimwe during the event.
