On Thursday, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock asserted that Iran is instigating the ongoing violence in Syria’s coastal region. She referenced Tehran-backed groups that are reportedly associated with remnants of President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, which have played a role in the turmoil.
During her press conference following a meeting with Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, Baerbock stated that “Iran is one of the key actors violating Syrian sovereignty and is involved in the recent events on the coast.”
Baerbock urged the Syrian government to take decisive action, calling for them to restrain extremist factions and ensure accountability for crimes committed. Furthermore, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that at least 1,383 civilians, mainly from the Alawite community, have lost their lives amid this latest outbreak of violence.
In response to these allegations, Iran has condemned the violence against Alawites while categorically denying its involvement in the unrest.
