JSFM’s statement highlighted that Laghari’s abduction is part of a larger trend of oppression targeting Sindhi activists by the Pakistani state. It stated, “Pakistan continues to forcibly disappear Sindhi activists, journalists, and human rights defenders, using fear and repression to silence those who demand justice and self-determination.” Furthermore, the movement raised alarms regarding an economic and environmental assault on Sindh, especially concerning the government’s ongoing illegal construction of six canals on the Indus River, which diverts essential water resources to Punjab.
These actions threaten the survival of millions of Sindhi people who rely on this water for agriculture and daily needs. JSFM proclaimed that this represents a direct threat to the existence of Sindh itself. Recently, growing frustrations over these human rights violations culminated in a significant protest outside the Pakistan Embassy in London on March 15, organized by the World Sindhi Congress (WSC).
The demonstration aimed to illuminate the issue of illegal canal construction and the plight of forcibly disappeared Sindhi nationalists. Sohail Abro, the Chairman of JSFM, participated in this protest and voiced strong opposition against Pakistan’s actions, asserting that the country must be held accountable for enforced disappearances. “We demand the immediate release of Taiib Laghari and all forcibly disappeared Sindhi activists,” he stated.
Abro emphasized that it is crucial for the illegal canal constructions on the Indus River to cease and for the right of the Sindhi nation to self-determination to be acknowledged. JSFM is calling upon international bodies such as the United Nations, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch to intervene in light of the reported human rights abuses by Pakistan.
The statement concluded with a powerful message: “Sindh is under attack–its people are being abducted, and its water is being stolen.
