Leaders from neighboring countries, including Angola and South Africa, will attend her inauguration.
Nandi-Ndaitwah won the election with 58 percent of the vote amidst chaotic conditions, as the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) garnered only 25.5 percent. Her election reflects continued loyalty to SWAPO despite challenges faced by liberation parties in the region. Unemployment was a significant issue during the campaign, particularly among the youth, with 44 percent of individuals aged 18-34 unemployed in 2023.
In a statement before her inauguration, Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized that job creation would be a priority, aiming to produce 500,000 jobs within five years, which will require an investment of 85 billion Namibian dollars (approximately $4.67 billion). Key job creation sectors identified include agriculture, fishing, and the creative and sports industries. She also called for national unity post-elections.
Reflecting on her election, Nandi-Ndaitwah remarked, “Of course it’s a good thing that we are breaking the ceiling, we are breaking the walls.” As a lifelong member of SWAPO, she was exiled during the liberation struggle and has served as foreign minister. Her stances include strict opposition to abortion and the illegality of same-sex marriage in Namibia.
Rich in natural resources like uranium and diamonds, Namibia aims to capitalize on its potential for solar and wind energy. However, Nandi-Ndaitwah has expressed doubts regarding the viability of the energy sector. The country is strategizing on how to utilize its resources effectively while addressing pressing issues such as unemployment and economic diversification.
