Military experts suggested that the army’s reclaiming of control over the Republican Palace signifies a significant blow to the RSF’s elite forces. According to these sources, the RSF had previously stored munitions and stationed its best-trained troops within the palace, marking it as a critical position. Following the army’s advances, military experts noted, “the army has destroyed equipment, killed a number of their forces and seized control of one of its most important supply centres in Khartoum.”
In recent months, the army has reportedly begun to reverse the fortunes of the conflict, managing to reclaim territory and cut off RSF forces in urban areas. Earlier this year, army forces broke a long-standing RSF siege at the General Command headquarters, allowing for reinforcements and further encirclement of RSF troops in Khartoum. According to a military source, many remaining RSF combatants have taken refuge in various buildings throughout central Khartoum.
The prolonged warfare has resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities and has displaced over 12 million Sudanese, escalating into the most catastrophic hunger and displacement crises globally.
