On April 2, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Brazzaville time, a virtual candidates’ forum will be conducted as part of the election process for the new World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa. This initiative, endorsed by WHO Member States in the Region, aims to enhance transparency in the electoral process and will be led by Honourable Louise Mapleh Kpoto, Minister of Health and Social Welfare of Liberia.

The forum serves to allow candidates to articulate their backgrounds and aspirations for their potential tenure. The eligible candidates, listed alphabetically by country, include: Dr. Michel N’da Konan Yao from Cote d’Ivoire, Dr. Mohamed Lamine Dramé from Guinea, Professor Janabi Mohamed Yakub from the United Republic of Tanzania, and Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa from Togo. Each candidate will present for a maximum of 20 minutes.

Member States may pose questions to the candidates and are encouraged to specify their selected candidate(s) by contacting the Regional Office via email at GoverningBodiesAfro[at]who[dot]int by March 26, 2025. Each candidate’s session will involve lottery-style question selection, ensuring a fair opportunity for inquiry. Questions must be concise, with one minute allotted for each query, while responses from candidates will be limited to three minutes.

As time management is crucial, a clock will be displayed throughout each segment of the interviews. The forum will also be streamed live in English, French, and Portuguese on the WHO Regional Office for Africa’s social media channels and website.

In summary, the upcoming virtual forum for the election of the WHO Regional Director for Africa is designed to promote transparency and engagement among Member States. Candidates will showcase their expertise and vision, while Member States are invited to interact through questions. With a structured approach to time management and interaction, the forum exemplifies a commitment to a democratic process within the WHO framework.
