Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has made history by being sworn in as Namibia’s first female president following her election victory last year. The inauguration took place during a ceremony that also marked Namibia’s 35th independence anniversary. She succeeds the outgoing President Nangolo Mbumba, who ascended to the presidency after the passing of former President Hage Geingob in 2024.

As Namibia’s fifth president since independence in 1990, Nandi-Ndaitwah secured her position with 57 percent of the votes cast in the 2024 presidential election. In her inaugural address, she emphasized her commitment to maintaining the achievements of independence while advancing economic and social progress for all citizens. “The task facing me, as the fifth president of the Republic of Namibia, is to preserve the gains of our independence on all fronts and to ensure that the unfinished agenda of economic and social advancement of our people is carried forward with vigor and determination to bring about shared balanced prosperity for all,” she stated.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by numerous heads of state from Africa as well as leaders of various international and regional organizations. Nandi-Ndaitwah, aged 72, is a long-standing member of the ruling South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), which has governed Namibia since it gained independence. She has held several key government positions since her entry into the National Assembly in 1990, including roles as a cabinet minister in various ministries and notably served as the country’s first female vice president in February 2024.

The inauguration of Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as Namibia’s first female president represents a significant milestone in the nation’s political landscape. Her election reflects her commitment to fostering economic and social development while upholding the values of independence. As she embarks on her presidency, the emphasis on unity and progress stands out as a crucial theme in her vision for Namibia’s future.
