The RSF has accused the Sudanese Armed Forces of airstrikes on Tora market in North Darfur, resulting in significant casualties. The UN expresses alarm over civilian attacks, while the SAF has released a map outlining territorial control. The conflict has led to tens of thousands of deaths and massive displacement.
On March 26, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan claimed that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) conducted bombing raids on the Tora market, located in North Darfur State. The RSF reported that the airstrikes resulted in over 100 fatalities and many injuries, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. The SAF has yet to respond to these allegations, according to reports from the Xinhua news agency.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric expressed grave concern over the escalating violence against civilians, highlighting the recent airstrike and an artillery attack targeting a mosque in Khartoum carried out by the RSF. These incidents underscore the troubling trend of increased attacks on civilian populations amidst the armed conflict in Sudan.
In a separate development, the SAF released a comprehensive map detailing its territorial control, for the first time illustrating areas held by the RSF. The SAF stated that it is actively seeking to eliminate militias and restore stability with the support of the Sudanese populace, indicating a sustained military effort against the RSF in various regions.
The SAF has marked areas under its control in green, including Northern, River Nile, Red Sea, Kassala, Gedaref, Blue Nile, Gezira, and Sinnar states. Conversely, RSF-controlled regions, comprising West, South, and East Darfur, were denoted in red. Since early 2024, the Sudanese military has reported advances, particularly in Omdurman and other strategic locations in central Sudan.
The prolonged conflict, nearing its two-year anniversary, has inflicted severe humanitarian repercussions, leading to the deaths of tens of thousands and displacing more than 15 million citizens. With the healthcare system in disarray, accurate casualty figures remain elusive amidst these unsettling developments.
The accusations made by the RSF against the SAF regarding airstrikes in North Darfur highlight the escalating tensions and violence in Sudan. As both sides continue to engage in military operations that exacerbate the humanitarian crisis, concerns over civilian safety remain paramount. The release of a control map by the SAF illustrates the ongoing power dynamics, reflecting territorial disputes that further complicate peace efforts in the region.
