During the session, Mr. Johan Mistiaen, Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, presented findings indicating that Nigeria’s statistical infrastructure requires immediate attention. He recommended an annual investment of $10 to $15 million to enhance the country’s statistical capabilities, thereby aligning them more closely with those of its aspirational peers.
In response to these observations, Minister Bagudu assured that the Nigerian government is committed to maintaining the independence of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). He praised the NBS for its reliable and methodical data release process, underscoring that there would be no governmental interference in its operations.
Moreover, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, the Statistician-General of the Federation and NBS CEO, emphasized that increased investment in statistics is vital for national growth. He commended the government for raising the agency’s budget allocation to its highest levels in a decade but noted that further funding and collaboration with development partners could yield even better outcomes.
