Russia Critiques Biden Administration’s Role in Ukraine Conflict and Praises Saudi Diplomatic Efforts

Dmitry Polyanskiy’s interview indicates that he views the Biden administration as worsening the Ukraine conflict. He commended Trump’s pragmatic approach and noted Saudi Arabia’s role in fostering diplomacy. Polyanskiy addressed the Gaza, Sudan, and Syria crises, emphasizing the need for Arab action and Russia’s support for peace initiatives. Overall, he expressed optimism about Saudi Arabia’s position in international diplomacy.

In an interview on the Arab News program “Frankly Speaking,” Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the UN, criticized the Biden administration, asserting that it exacerbated the Ukraine conflict instead of facilitating peace. He noted that a shift in perception could have averted the situation, contending that earlier American policies were anti-Russia rather than supporting Ukraine. Polyanskiy stated, “The previous (American) administration was unfortunately part of the problem, not part of the solution.”

Polyanskiy lauded the Trump administration’s more pragmatic approach, claiming it recognized the realities on the ground and the diminishing success of the Kyiv regime. He asserted that under Trump, there were proposals focused on stopping hostilities and fostering peace in Ukraine. He remarked, “President Trump has just changed the optics,” suggesting a more realistic diplomatic vision.

During the discussions in Riyadh, a draft agreement emerged which proposed a ceasefire in the Black Sea in exchange for relaxed sanctions on Russia. Polyanskiy hailed it as a pivotal moment for Saudi Arabia to establish itself as a diplomatic hub. He appreciated Saudi Arabia’s efforts in facilitating dialogue among the involved parties, stating, “They reached out to us, they reached out to Americans, to Ukrainians, and it’s hard to overestimate the role that they played.”

On the ongoing crises in Gaza, Sudan, and Syria, Polyanskiy highlighted Russia’s commitment to international dialogue. He recognized Russia’s limited influence over Israel compared to the United States when it comes to the Gaza situation. He made it clear that Arab nations must mobilize to advocate for the Palestinian cause and expressed the need for all parties to embrace a two-state solution.

As for Sudan, Polyanskiy affirmed Russia’s backing of the Sudanese government in its conflict against the Rapid Support Forces, indicating a positive outlook for military developments. He stated that Russia vetoed a UN resolution due to concerns about equating the RSF and the Sudanese government. \n
Polyanskiy addressed the Syrian crisis, emphasizing Russia’s aim to support a peaceful transition in the country under a broad-based governmental authority. He further highlighted the long-standing friendship and historical ties between Russia and Syria and expressed an eagerness to assist Syria during this transitional phase, stating, “We have very good basic elements to consolidate friendship and cooperation between our countries.”

The interview with Dmitry Polyanskiy reveals Russia’s critical stance towards the Biden administration’s actions regarding the Ukraine conflict, advocating instead for a diplomatic approach aligned with the realities on the ground. While discussing regional crises, Polyanskiy underscored the importance of unified Arab efforts, the need for a two-state solution for Palestine, and Russia’s commitment to aiding in peaceful transitions in both Sudan and Syria. The evolving role of Saudi Arabia in international diplomacy was also acknowledged, reflecting a changing geopolitical landscape.
