On September 25, military leaders from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) convened in Karagwe District, Tanzania, to enhance cross-border security measures. This marked the 11th bilateral meeting aimed at curtailing cross-border crimes and fostering security collaboration between the two nations. The discussion highlighted the achievements since previous meetings that sought to address illegal border activities and potential security threats. Furthermore, the officers examined innovative strategies to mitigate the challenges faced by border communities engaged in legal trade. The meeting underscored the significance of an ongoing partnership between RDF and TPDF to maintain a safe atmosphere for cross-border commerce. Brigadier General Gabriel Elias Kwiligwa, Commander of the TPDF 202nd Brigade, emphasized the positive results stemming from these regular security meetings, which are driven by the leadership of both nations’ presidents. He stated, “Our continued cooperation ensures a secure environment for the citizens of Rwanda and Tanzania to conduct business freely. It’s vital that we remain committed to addressing any emerging security issues along our shared border.” Colonal Pascal Munyankindi, Acting Commander of the RDF 5th Infantry Division, expressed appreciation towards Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania for establishing a forum for military leaders to address tactical security challenges. He noted the advancements made since the last meeting held in Kayonza District, Rwanda in May 2024, which successfully disrupted criminal activities along the border. He remarked, “We have made tremendous progress since our last meeting, and this collaboration continues to enhance security along our shared border.” Additionally, the security conference included visits to strategic border locations in Kyerwa and Karagwe districts. Traders were also invited to share their experiences regarding the impacts of the security collaboration on their cross-border activities. Fokasi Tunda Marico, a trader from Kafunjo in Karagwe District, reflected on his 25 years of business experience and remarked, “The security measures put in place by both governments have made trading much easier. Rwandan soldiers are always welcoming, and their presence at the border ensures a smooth flow of activities.” He advocated for sustained visits and cooperation between Tanzanian and Rwandan forces in order to tackle any prospective challenges, thus ensuring uninterrupted cross-border trade.
The meeting between the Rwanda Defence Force and the Tanzania People’s Defence Force reflects a proactive approach to maintaining security along the shared borders of the two nations.
