NATO and Iraq have commenced a high-level political dialogue to bolster their partnership, focusing on enhancing Iraqi security institutions through NATO’s advisory mission. Key discussions addressed mutual interests and regional stability, with a commitment to respecting Iraq’s sovereignty. The initiative aims to sustain collaboration and outline strategies for future engagement in the Middle East.

NATO and Iraq have initiated a high-level political dialogue, reinforcing their longstanding partnership. The discussions commenced with a delegation of senior Iraqi officials, led by National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji, visiting NATO Headquarters. The focus of this dialogue is on advising and improving Iraqi security institutions through the NATO Mission Iraq, which has been active since 2018 under Iraqi authorities’ request, aimed at bolstering security against terrorism and Daesh resurgence. Tom Goffus, NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Operations, emphasized that the mission respects Iraq’s sovereignty while enabling the country to construct more effective armed forces and security frameworks. Mr. al-Araji reiterated the intention behind this sustained collaboration, which is to fortify Iraq’s security and stability. He noted that the mission is non-combat and cooperative, contributing to Iraq’s long-term security without opposing any other entity. The launch of the political dialogue represents a strategic move to discuss collaborative approaches towards achieving a secure Middle East, as stated by Javier Colomina, NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs. The appointment of a Special Representative for the southern neighborhood aims to enhance NATO’s engagement with partners in the region, providing a centralized point for coordination. Discussions during the meetings spanned the NATO-Iraq partnership and the prospects for future collaboration, including regional security concerns.

In response to Iraq’s request for support in reconsolidating its security post-ISIS, NATO has embarked on a non-combat Mission since 2018 to provide advisory assistance to Iraqi forces. This partnership seeks to enhance the capabilities of Iraqi security institutions, enabling a robust structure that promotes stability and protects Iraq’s sovereignty. The new political dialogue seeks to deepen this collaboration and align strategic efforts to address regional security challenges and foster a stable environment for Iraq.

The initiation of high-level political dialogue between NATO and Iraq signifies a commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation on security and stability within the Middle East. Through ongoing engagement and the NATO Mission Iraq, both parties aim to enhance Iraq’s security capabilities while ensuring respect for its sovereignty—an essential part of fostering long-term peace and security in the region.
