Egypt and Jordan Foreign Ministers Discuss Regional Stability and Syrian Sovereignty

The Egyptian and Jordanian foreign ministers held talks focused on supporting Syria’s sovereignty and political stability. They discussed the significance of a Syrian-led political process, condemned recent Israeli incursions, and emphasized Jordan’s role in aiding Syria’s reconstruction efforts. Regional security concerns, particularly along the Jordan-Syria border, were also addressed during these discussions.

On Monday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi convened to discuss the pressing situation in Syria. Both diplomats highlighted the critical need to uphold Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, advocating for a Syrian-owned political process that actively involves citizen participation to secure their rights. During the discussions, Safadi provided insights from his earlier visit to Syria, where he met with Syrian officials to deliberate on the country’s political transition and regional security dynamics, condemning the recent Israeli intrusion into Syrian territory.

Minister Safadi accentuated Jordan’s commitment to supporting Syria’s reconstruction, emphasizing the strategic importance of this endeavor for both Jordan and the surrounding region. He called on international and regional partners to cooperate with Syria’s emerging leadership to ensure stability. Additionally, Safadi addressed the comprehensive security challenges along the 386-kilometer Jordan-Syria border, which include terrorism, drug trafficking, and weapons smuggling, asserting that maintaining a secure border is imperative.

On the same day, Foreign Minister Abdelatty held a phone discussion with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud regarding the ongoing circumstances in Syria, reiterating the importance of preserving the nation’s sovereignty and supporting its institutional capacities for governance. He stressed the necessity of a well-rounded, Syrian-led political framework to facilitate stability and resilience within the nation.

The discussions between Egypt and Jordan’s foreign ministers reflect a broader regional strategy to stabilize Syria, which has endured a protracted civil conflict since 2011. The international community and neighboring countries have vested interests in Syria’s political future and reconstruction, particularly given the security threats posed by extremism and conflict spillover. Furthermore, Jordan, which shares a border with Syria, faces direct challenges related to trafficking and terrorism, thereby prioritizing the stabilization of its northern neighbor as essential for regional security.

The meeting between the Egyptian and Jordanian foreign ministers underscores the commitment to support Syria’s sovereignty and promote a comprehensive political resolution driven by its citizens. Both officials recognized the imperative of coordinating efforts across borders to secure and stabilize the region, with a shared vision of engaging multiple international partners in Syria’s reconstruction initiatives. This diplomatic engagement highlights the complexities of regional politics and the crucial role of established Middle Eastern nations in navigating the recovery of war-torn Syria.
