The PKS Deputy Chair’s Call for Action Against Israeli Expansionism in Palestine

Israel’s approval for constructing new settlements in the West Bank was criticized by Indonesian representative Sukamta, who lamented the lack of international sanctions. He highlighted a double standard in responses to geopolitical conflicts, urging Indonesia to take a stronger leadership role in advocating for Palestine within the G-20 framework. Sukamta emphasized the need for immediate and long-term strategies to remedy the situation, including diplomatic pressure on Israel and economic strengthening of Indonesia.

On May 14, a representative from the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sukamta, expressed grave concerns regarding Israel’s recent approval for the construction of 4,427 new homes in the occupied West Bank. This move is part of what he characterizes as ongoing territory annexation, a crime that persists largely due to the lack of stringent sanctions from the United Nations and other countries. Sukamta pointedly noted the disparity in the international response to Israel’s actions compared to the swift and severe sanctions imposed on Russia over its aggression against Ukraine, emphasizing that such double standards reflect a disturbing prioritization of politics and economics over humanitarian concerns. He lamented, “The countries in the world are shameful and show that politics and economics are above humanity.” Furthermore, Sukamta urged the Indonesian government to take decisive actions in the context of the Palestinian conflict, particularly as Indonesia holds a leadership role in the G-20. He stated the need for Indonesia to emerge as a true leader capable of influencing other nations to prioritize Palestine in their international agenda. His recommendations included immediate diplomatic efforts to pressure Israel and advocate for the deployment of UN peacekeepers, along with the imposition of strict sanctions on Israel. On a broader scale, he stressed the importance of enhancing Indonesia’s economic, technological, and defense capabilities, thereby preventing the international community from undermining Indonesia’s position. Sukamta’s call to action resonates in light of recent escalations, including violent incidents during the last month of Ramadan, which further highlight the urgent need for global intervention in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been a focal point of international relations, particularly noted for its humanitarian implications. The disproportionate responses from the international community, particularly the stark contrast between the sanctions imposed on Russia for its actions in Ukraine and the relative silence surrounding Israel’s actions in Palestine, raises questions about global ethics in conflict resolution. As Indonesian representatives grapple with this complex issue, they stress the need for a unified and robust response to uphold international humanitarian standards. Indonesia’s current role in the G-20 offers a unique platform for asserting its stance against colonialism and advocating for Palestinian rights, which is especially pertinent in the context of its historical position against colonial rule.

In conclusion, the recent approval of new Israeli homes in the West Bank by Israeli authorities demonstrates a continuation of territorial expansion that raises significant concerns among international observers, particularly Indonesian lawmakers. The absence of firm sanctions against Israel is viewed as a critical failure of the global community. As highlighted by Sukamta, Indonesia must actively pursue diplomatic channels to advocate for Palestinian rights and position itself as a leader capable of orchestrating meaningful international dialogue. Strengthening Indonesia’s own capabilities will further enable it to play a pivotal role on the world stage, especially concerning pivotal humanitarian issues like the Palestinian cause.
