Syrian security forces arrested Ibrahim Huweija, a former intelligence officer, linked to the 1977 murder of Lebanese politician Kamal Jumblatt. The arrest occurred amid intense clashes with supporters of the Assad regime in Latakia. Huweija, who led air force intelligence for 15 years, faces serious allegations, including numerous assassinations during the Assad era. Walid Jumblatt, the victim’s son, acknowledged the arrest on social media.

In a significant development, Syrian security forces apprehended Ibrahim Huweija, a former intelligence officer linked to numerous murders, including the 1977 killing of Lebanese politician Kamal Jumblatt. As reported by the state news agency SANA, this arrest occurred amid intense clashes with supporters of the former regime led by Bashar al-Assad in Latakia, marking a dramatic escalation in regional tensions.

Huweija, who served as the head of air force intelligence from 1987 to 2002 under both Hafez and Bashar al-Assad, has remained largely out of the public eye, with minimal information available about him. A security source stated, “After thorough monitoring and investigation, our forces in the city of Jableh managed to arrest the criminal General Ibrahim Huweija.”

He faces severe allegations, including orchestrating numerous assassinations during Hafez al-Assad’s reign, and is particularly accused of overseeing the assassination of Kamal Jumblatt, a prominent Druze leader and founder of the Lebanese Progressive Socialist Party. Kamal Jumblatt was murdered on March 16, 1977, near a Syrian border post, following his opposition to Hafez al-Assad’s military involvement in Lebanon’s civil conflict.

Walid Jumblatt, Kamal Jumblatt’s son and political successor, shared the news of Huweija’s arrest on social media, exclaiming, “Allahu Akbar (God is Greatest).” This arrest may represent a pivotal moment in seeking accountability for historical political violence in the region.

The arrest of Ibrahim Huweija highlights ongoing struggles regarding accountability for political violence in Syria and Lebanon. His alleged role in significant assassinations, particularly that of Kamal Jumblatt, underscores the enduring impact of past political conflicts. This event may also spark further discourse around the legacies of the Assad regime and its activities during the civil war, introducing new dynamics in the region’s already volatile environment.
