On March 11, the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, announced the prestigious honor of The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This accolade marks PM Modi as the first Indian recipient of this significant award, which now stands as his 21st international recognition from various countries.
During the award ceremony, PM Ramgoolam emphasized the appropriateness of the award, stating, “The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean is very fitting for you, Prime Minister.” He noted that since Mauritius became a republic, only five foreign dignitaries had received this title, including Nelson Mandela, who was honored in 1998.
The announcement was made at an Indian community event, where national anthems of both India and Mauritius were played in the presence of PM Modi and PM Ramgoolam. During his official visit to Mauritius, PM Modi participated as the Chief Guest at the Mauritius National Day celebrations, showcasing the robust diplomatic and cultural relations between the two nations, as stated in an official release by the Ministry of External Affairs.
Additionally, PM Modi presented the President of Mauritius and the First Lady with OCI Cards, along with symbolic gifts such as holy Sangam water from Mahakumbh and a Banarasi Saree in a Sadeli box for the First Lady. On the visit, he also toured the Ayurveda garden at the State House, created through collaboration with the Government of India, accompanied by President Dharambeer Gokhool.
He expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome during a special lunch hosted by President Gokhool, reaffirming India’s commitment to nurturing the longstanding relationship between India and Mauritius.
This historic recognition awarded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi not only signifies the strengthening ties between India and Mauritius but also reflects India’s growing impact on the international stage. The visit and associated gifts exemplify a commitment to collaborative cultural exchange and diplomatic engagement between the two nations, further solidifying their enduring partnership.
