Senator Pete Ricketts argues for restoring pressure on Iran due to its longstanding terrorism sponsorship, including missile attacks on Israel and threats against the U.S. He criticizes President Biden’s appeasement policy and emphasizes President Trump’s approach of maximum pressure to deter Iran. Legislation has been introduced to encourage European allies to reinstate sanctions, as a nuclear-armed Iran poses a serious threat to U.S. and allied security.
The Islamic Republic of Iran stands as the foremost state sponsor of terrorism globally, having financed attacks across various nations for decades. Iranian proxies have persistently targeted Israel with missile strikes and even executed the largest ballistic missile assault on the country last year. Furthermore, Iran has openly threatened both Israel and the United States, engaging in actions against American forces and attempting to assassinate prominent figures such as President Trump.
Despite this mounting aggression, the Biden administration has adopted a policy of appeasement towards Iran, relaxing sanctions and facilitating an influx of $100 billion in oil revenue. This included the unfreezing of $6 billion of Iranian assets, coinciding painfully with the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Evidence suggests that Iran consistently violated terms of the previous nuclear agreement, while U.S. safety was compromised due to Biden’s perceived weaknesses.
In contrast, President Trump has recognized the necessity of a firm approach towards Iran, promoting a policy of maximum pressure to deter its hostile actions. His previous administration’s sanctions drastically reduced Iran’s foreign reserves and significantly impeded funding for terrorism, culminating in the historic Abraham Accords—a testament to successful diplomacy in the region.
Recently reinstating this policy, President Trump has issued directives to the Treasury and State Departments aimed at driving Iran’s oil exports down to zero. He has also compelled the U.N. Ambassador to rally allies in reinstating sanctions against Iran, thereby restoring a collective sense of deterrence.
To facilitate this effort further, I have introduced legislation aimed at prompting our European allies—particularly the E3, which includes the United Kingdom, France, and Germany—to immediately reinstate U.N. sanctions against Iran. These sanctions would impose stringent export controls, travel bans, and asset freezes on individuals involved in Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, sending a clear message regarding their responsibilities.
The development of a nuclear-armed Iran presents a substantial threat to U.S. and allied security. Nebraska’s Offutt Air Force Base, home to U.S. Strategic Command, plays a pivotal role in countering such threats. Thus, measures like snapback sanctions are essential for upholding President Trump’s maximum pressure strategy on Iran.
I remain committed to addressing the threats posed by adversaries in my capacity on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. I will persist in advocating for our allies to fulfill their obligations and will work collaboratively with President Trump to maintain the safety of American citizens.
In summary, restoring pressure on Iran is crucial to ensuring national security and deterring the state’s aggressive actions. Through reinstating sanctions and rallying international support, the U.S. can effectively limit Iran’s capacity to fund terrorism and develop nuclear weapons. Continuous advocacy for allied cooperation and robust diplomatic efforts will play a significant role in this endeavor.
