Jorge Martin Set to Miss 2025 MotoGP Season Opener Due to Injuries

Jorge Martin, reigning MotoGP champion, will not participate in the opening races of the 2025 season due to injuries. Massimo Rivola, Aprilia’s CEO, confirmed Martin’s condition remains serious, and his recovery is prioritized. Aprilia will utilize other riders while hoping for Martin’s return at the Circuit of the Americas.

Aprilia Racing’s CEO, Massimo Rivola, provided an update regarding reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin, who is set to miss the opening rounds of the 2025 season due to injuries. Martin, who recently suffered fractures in both hands and his left foot, is not expected to debut with the Aprilia RS-GP until at least the third round of the season. Rivola expressed disappointment about the situation, acknowledging the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Martin’s injuries.

During a press conference at the Buriram circuit, Rivola confirmed that Martin would definitely miss the second round in Argentina, stating, “For sure he won’t race also in Argentina. The situation of the left hand is not good at the moment.” Although Martin underwent successful surgery, Rivola emphasized the importance of prioritizing Martin’s recovery over rushing back to competition, stating that they do not want to take any risks with his condition.

Martin made history as the first Independent rider to win the title in the MotoGP era and faced a challenging start to the 2025 season, resulting from a series of accidents that left him with serious injuries. His troublesome start began with two highsides during testing, leading to significant injuries that required surgical intervention. Rivola noted the ongoing disagreement between Aprilia and Michelin regarding the incidents’ causes.

Recently, Martin sustained a complex fracture of his radius during a training mishap on a supermoto bike, necessitating urgent surgical repair. He personally informed Rivola of the situation, demonstrating resilience despite the setbacks. Rivola described Martin as a fighter, noting that his focus remains on racing, although they must ensure he recovers fully before returning to the track.

Looking ahead, Rivola will be relying on test rider Lorenzo Savadori and new signing Marco Bezzecchi in the first couple of races. While he ruled out imposing restrictions on supermoto-style training generally, he acknowledged that riders must know their limits. The earliest anticipated return for Martin to the circuit will be the Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Texas, from March 28-30, which was the location of Aprilia’s previous win last season.

In summary, Jorge Martin will be absent from the start of the 2025 MotoGP season due to significant injuries. Massimo Rivola, Aprilia Racing’s CEO, underlined the necessity of focusing on Martin’s health rather than rushing his return. Aprilia will field other riders during this time, with hopes for Martin’s recovery to enable him to race at the Texas Grand Prix.
